The food was ok but the service is seriously lacking. Once the waitress brought our food she never returned to check on us or bring our ticket. We finally flagged down another waitress to get a drink refill and were given a look and told to "hold on". It was obvious we were bothering her. Never to return

Great food, good choices for vegetarians and people with various food allergies. Salsa was amazing, a bit spicy but we loved it. We got the chicken burrito and chicken chalupa and enjoyed it.

Busy with locals. No it isn't fancy it is an old building, we had fajitas and shrimp, large portions, price is high but we left very full, our attendant tired to take care of us along with cooking and cleaning, it is cool, every family owned and is part of Route 66 history. They have changed the name from original but all still in same family. They claim Mexican and american but they don't carry a variety. Salsa is home made. Very large portions!!

This is a great place if you are looking for a bar in this tiny town. As a restaurant, not so much. I had the carne adovada which is basically chili with pork chunks. The accompanying beans and rice are reminiscent of canned fare. Well, at least it was spicy as billed. Oh, and for all you 21/22 year olds from other states who still have vertical driver's license ID's, they won't serve you alcohol here. It doesn't matter that the ID says you date of birth. "No, I'm sorry, we can't accept vertical ID's" Keep driving til you reach civilization.

We had a late lunch of Mexican Chalupas and Tacos. We aren't here to scuba dive otherwise I'd have to agree with Amanda's review. There was nothing special about this lunch. My wife wanted to give it ONE star but I gave Route 66 Cafe ONE star and this was slightly better. We are still looking for a decent restaurant in Santa Rosa. No, I wouldn't eat here again. It looks like many of the restaurants are out of business in this town, how bad could they have been?

First of all...they need their asses kicked for even calling this Mexican food. Unfortunately I was unable to Yelp this restaurant prior to going for a quick dinner. I was also stoo-pid enough to look at the add in the Yellow Pages and buy into the words they used to describe their own establishment. My husband had Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes with a Biscuit. I'm sure you are wondering why he'd get Chicken Fried Steak at a Mexican restaurant but it was one of their "Specialties". Hhmmm...the Chicken Fried Steak aka Rubber Puck, the biscuit aka Hockey Puck. Now...the Mashed Potatoes indescribable WHY? They were so Lumpy and Cold I wouldn't even take a second nibble to figure out what they tasted like. I got the #1 Crispy Chicken Taco, Cheese Enchilada, Beef Tamale with Rice and Beans. Blah...Bleeack....huh huh huh Really!?!?!??! I'm not going to waste my time going on and on just a Luke Warm Mess on a Plate. The kids were totally dissatisfied with their Bacon Cheeseburgers...the bacon looked like ends and pieces. The meat was totally dried out. We couldn't wait to get up out of the dump. As we drove back to our Hotel we all agreed we should have went to Denny's. OMG...almost forgot to tell you about the Margaritas. The first round had a splash of liquor...the second was just juice we had to send them back and get a bottled beer. This place is definitely a place to drive on by actually speed up and close your eyes when you are on Route 66. DON'T DO IT!

I used Fodor's very good recommendation to pick out this place. We were in town sight-seeing. We drove by the restaurant three times in two hours (it's a small town). Each time the same waitress was outside smoking a cigarette. We joked about it until we returned to eat there and this woman became our waitress. She was a bit of a sourpuss and spent most of the time sitting in the back of the restaurant chatting with other waitresses. We had to hail another waitress to get a to-go box by the end of lunch. Earlier, she came to our table with a basket of chips and salsa and asked us if we wanted more. We said no. She put the chips on the table anyway. My chile fries were good (I took them home) but my husband picked the chile hamburger because Fodor's said it was juicy and good. He said it was dry and tateless. He also ordered a shake. The waitress called back to the kitchen ("do we have any ice cream left"?) No one responded. She came back to us with a milkshake made entirely of milk and what tasted like coffee creamer...no ice cream. It was the worst shake we'd ever tasted. Why couldn't she just tell us they had no ice cream instead of trying to rip us off with a terrible ice-creamless shake? She didn't care.

If you find yourself in Santa Rosa, New Mexico on accident like we did, then you'll probably end up looking for a place to eat. We needed to eat dinner so we headed to Josephs for margaritas and food. This whole town is, let's say "interesting," so we were skeptical about where to eat but we had a good experience (especially considering the tiny size of this town). The food was good, service was fast and atmosphere was fine. It was an older restaurant but it met all of our needs and we enjoyed our tacos, enchiladas and burgers.

Husband and I shared a combination plate - taco + tamale + enchilada with an extra taco on the side. Plate came with standard rice and beans, and we each each enjoyed a margarita on the rocks. A little treat to ourselves after our 66 trek from Tulsa, headin to Albuquerque for the night (holiday trip from L.A. To Chicago and back again). Needless to say, we like sitting down to a dinner after a day of food in the car. OK, back to the food... Food was good- not great- but for a small town like Santa Rosa, you've gotta have the right expectations! Have to say, I was absolutely pleasantly surprised by the complimentary sopapillas (drizzled with honey... I ate the whole thing even after I said I wouldn't). The complimentary salsa and chips before our meal was also a welcome tide-me-over since the service was hopelessly slow. The atmosphere was good - neat to have nostalgic decor and even a fun game to play at each table. They also have a neat Rt 66 gift shop adjoined to the restaurant, as well as a sizeable bar with pool tables, etc. Very slow and not many people, but this was also a Sunday night. Women's restroom had no toilet paper to speak of. I give this Mexican restaurant a 3 for great atmosphere, complimentary dessert, friendly service, allowing me to experience some bit of old Rt 66, and decent food for a small town. But they lost points on slow service and unkept bathrooms. I recommend this place if you're hungry and passing thru Santa Rosa, NM.

We had a coupon... Usually the kiss of death, right? Right. Even my food-hearted quantity v quality husband gave it a "C".

Like most folks, just stopping through on my way back to LA- my father had mentioned Santa Rosa from when he lived in Gallup in the early 60s, and being in a hurry, I booked a place here- not much to say about this quaint and somewhat sad little town. Josephs is typical tourist trap fare- overpriced and underachieving. However, they did have one advantage: The two better places in town were either closed for the night or closed for good. I had the Adobada Burrito and wisely asked what kind of cheese they put on it. When the waitress shrugged and said, "American?" My Spider Senses tingled and I asked them not to include it. This decision probably salvaged my meal. A word for the wise: never trust a "mexican" restaurant that plays an oldies station.

Food: The Mexican (er, Tex Mex) here was only mediocre compared to others I've been to, and I'm from the Midwest. Compared to my favorite places in Detroit's Mexicantown, this place is pitiful. Value: With an appetizer and a couple of beers each, our total came to about $55... way too much for what we got. Service: Slow and forgetful. Overall: I won't return.

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. It doesn't even deserve one star. First we had to wait at least 10-15 minutes just to get our drink order. While we were waiting for the 30-45 minutes for our food, two of us ran out of our beverage. When our food finally arrived, we were told they were out of gravy -- four out of five of us ordered chicken strips with gravy. Instead we got barbecue sauce. The chicken strips were overdone and of poor quality. (I make better chicken strips at home with frozen Tyson chicken strips.) These weren't even remotely worth the $9 and some change they cost. The fries weren't even good. I lost any appetite I had left just looking at the food. This is the only time I have ever told a restaurant I wouldn't pay for the food. The manager (I guess that's who she was) was obviously not happy about our complaints. But we weren't happy at all either. I ended up paying for our drinks and the kids meal we ordered. I just wanted to get of the place. We should have just stopped at Dairy Queen.

Considering the choices around here this place was great. Food was alright, service was fast. Drinks were kind of expensive

My brother proclaimed his enchilada the best he's ever had. And while I merely enjoyed my tacos and margaritas, I'd go back to Joseph's if passing through again. Like many establishments on Route 66, it was clear that Joseph's had seen better days, a fact reinforced by the huge restaurant being mostly empty. The service was prompt and friendly. And thankfully our food was not immediately brought out to us, demonstrating that it was made fresh.

This place oozes Route 66 nostalgia; it is on the menu, on the walls, and all over the gift shop. Circa 1966 music plays over the sound system. There are even Route 66 branded soda bottles in the display case. The food was ok but overpriced. I had a $10 club sandwich with fries. I was good but not $10 good. The service was fast and friendly. There were swallows flying around outside the front window, and there were even some swallow nests attached to the outside wall.

  • Val W.

We were starving and stopped in. The food is pretty basic... something like your aunt might throw together from stuff she has in her fridge. My salad w/ice berg lettuce, for example. However, the food is honest. The taco salad was good and the enchiladas were great. The sopapillas are to DIE for. They were certainly not mediocre and they made our stop worth it. Plus the waitress was kind and the service was fast.

Excellent food. Southwest fare plus american stuff for the gringos. 4 meals ordered and 4 happy customers. Red chile was spicy as was the dipping salsa. Green chile mild but delicious. We knocked them a star for an unusually long wait to be served and a long wait at the register to pay on the way out. Several customers also waited a while to be seated. Food came out fast once we ordered. Tequila makes us smile. A good stop off the interstate. I'd come back.

Motorcycled in off 40 onto old 66 from NYC Its a mom and pop joint run by the son now, and pretty much the only sole owner joint on a strip of Carl Jrs to McDees, so i figured I could get some local flavor. It's a very small town know for its great lake diving. Take the diving away and then well, I guess its just a dive of a town - ba da biing - take my wife please! They have an extentsive menu, but not deep on artistry here, go with the Mexican since thats the familys ancestry. I had the tamales which were GOOD - not great, but in this small town good is fabulous. The service is friendly, warm atmosphere kitched up with everything 66. A souvienier shop is attached. Love the formica topped tables and chrome leather chairs all classic and original. And the booths are kinda of cozy. Little route 66 curtains on the windows add to the warmth/kitch. It's the pefect quick roadside stop - if you consider it that, then they do it well. I liked how the son/owner is on top of the staff. He wears a big smile, constantly cruises the joint, and was tellling his waitress smile, smile, smile. They look to please which is nice. His parents are kinda local legends from way back during the depression. You can read all about the family and town in the paper/menu you get when seated. However, it's a bit overpriced I'd say. The couple in the booth behind complained to the waitress about the price of a slice of pie - five bucks - and said when she walked, "Maybe for tourists but not for us locals' I've been eating a ton of pie on the road and I'd have to say they're right . I've seen the slices in the case - most roadside stops wouldnt charge more than three. Hell I was in a WAFFLE HOUSE this morn and they have a great ONE DOLLAR slice that rivals their five. But all said and done its a warm family run joint that does a decent job with a smile which is better than cold corporate poison. Adios, gots to roll onto GRACELAND MEMPHIS TENNESSE, GOING TO GRACELAND, GRACELAND - THE KING AWAITS!

Great restaurant food I disagree with every review about this place very good service and very good food only thing I Have against it was expense of drinks, but other than that very good restaurant.

Captive audience. Zero choice. Pack some extra CornNuts and keep driving on by if you are on a road trip. If you are in search of the Blue Hole, pack some water and CornNuts and still drive by this place. I would rather eat at a gas station vending machine.

This is a good restaurant for stopping by if you are travelling on I-40. The portions are large. I ordered the tamales because they are my favorite Mexican food. There were two and they came with beans, rice and a small salad. There is a small bar attached to the restaurant but it was quiet the night I was there (Saturday night!).

Ate here for lunch, and were pleased with the food and service. I had a chicken taco salad and the hubster carne adovado, both pretty darn good. Also Loved the complimentary sopapillas!

I was in Santa Rosa for scuba diving, which is probably what you are in Santa Rosa for if you're reading this review. How do I know this? Because there's nothing else to do in this little town! Or maybe you are passing through while driving Route 66 - that's the only other reason I can think of to come here. Yes, it's that bad. Joseph's was where our dive group decided to meet for dinner on the first night. The restaurant was certainly accommodating and we got a nice big table in the back that fit all of us. And no, my fajita dinner did not make me sick - although I was told that the only safe dishes at Joseph's are the Mexican food, and this comes from reputable sources (dive masters and instructors who spend a lot of time in Santa Rosa). My fajitas were a tad greasy,...but my corona was good! E's chile rellenos were so-so. I guess if all I was comparing Joseph's to was the other dining establishments in Santa Rosa, they might get more stars. But when it fits into my entire dining experience, it's only Meh. Sorry :(

Extremely mediocre food. The burgers were supposed to be 1/2 lb., and there is no way they were any bigger (probably smaller) than a McDonald's 1/4 pounder. They insisted they would cook mine rare, and it came out very well done. My son did not even like the plain cheese quesadilla - pretty hard to screw one of those up. Onion rings were awful. Definitely processed food from the freezer. I will say my older son insisted there be no garnish on his burger or plate, and they got that right. They brag about their root beer floats, and they had no root beer. Service was a bit spotty and not that friendly. And the place is extremely run down. Some find it charming, but it just seemed old and dirty to me.

Ate dinner here on the recommendation of family. My husband and I ordered the 2 chicken enchilada dinner. The presentation was very good, but the chicken had the smell and texture of canned chicken from the grocery store. Not impressed. The menu has many items on it, including pizza, which looked good. Cannot recommend the mexican food.

Every time I road trip through the SouthWest I stop in Santa Rosa just to have a cuppa coffee or breakfast at Joseph's--not for the quality of the food but simply to soak up the feel of the place. Yeah, I bask in the nostalgic vinyl-covered booths and imagine the past conversations that hang in the air. You can almost hear road-weary moms & dads ordering scrambled eggs while kids ask, "Are we there yet?" There's even a beautiful old jukebox that greets you when you walk in the door. If it worked, I'd give Joseph's another star.

Not bad, I'm working there for a month and was tryn to find a bar that had good prices on beer an possibly some ladies to "talk" to. I found a place with good prices on beer, only $2.50 for a bottle of Budweiser. I went in there on a Sunday about 5pm and I was literally the only person in there besides the employees. They seemed ok not exceptional or anywere near but ok. I drank two Budweiser's and still noone so I left and drank at my motel. Overall not bad, some company would of been nice though. Kinda feel like a drunk drinking alone ina bar. Oh well

Overall decent experience for a rural restaurant. Only thing homemade were biscuits and mashed potatoes, otherwise everything frozen, out of a can or jar. Good service, but automatic 20% gratuity for large party

Cute newspaper style menu offering mostly Mexican food. I had Ok enchiladas and a beer. It was open and that gets an extra star. I did like the Route 66 gift shop in the building.

Delicious adovada! I had mine in a burrito covered with red chile sauce and melted cheese with just a touch of sour cream on the side! Would definitely go back for more!

Very disappointed due to service , the waitress disappeared and only showed up once and other people after us got their food before us and did not appreciate it one bit , also had to ask a different waitress for a refill and our ticket. That place really need to work on people skills/waitressing

Worst service EVER! Can't tell you about the food because we left. Literally we were treated so poorly between the door and being seated that it ruined what would have been a meal there.

For a Rt66 roadside restaurant one doesn't expect too much...the margarita's are hand made not mixes...n r great! Carne Ardovada is my go to "how good is this place" std of judgement... Definitely better than average, I've had better but this was good...the salsa is also made fresh n has a good kick...not some bulk stuff that's fortified...I started at 3 stars n couldn't make it 3 1/2 , which this should be...so it got 4...oh..eat at the bar less its Fri or Sat then it's gonna b busy shoot n pool n the band setting up...so wear your scootn shoes

Alright. So I was debating about whether this place is a strong 1 or a weak 2 and I decided to go with a strong 1. There wasn't a single pivotal factor that is swinging this review but rather a number of smaller issues that when combined together, really don't make a strong case for stopping by. Let's start with the service. We had to ask twice for our table to get silverware. This is after our food arrived and then the first time silverware was only brought for 2 of the 4 people. Food and drinks didn't arrive to the table with any sort of consistency. We had one plate arrive 15 minutes before the next two. Then the last one showed up 5 minutes after those. Another friend at the table next to us waited closed to 40 minutes to get his plate, which meant that the 5 people next to him had already gotten their food, eaten, and had finished. The food itself was pretty uninspiring. As in, this is one of the very few restaurants where I didn't clean my plate; I left probably half of my plate in fact. 3 of us at our table ended up losing our appetite and just left our plates on the table. The 4th person admits the food wasn't good but still ate out of duty. Not a food snob mind you - I actively seek out other 1 and 2 star establishments much to the chagrin of my friends. In fact I ended up even eating at the McDonald's down the road earlier today. Truthfully, I most likely would've taken Taco Bell over this place. Finally, I ordered two margaritas, one frozen, and one on the rocks. Neither of them contained more than an eyedropper of actual alcohol. I have the tolerance of a prepubescent asian girl and I barely tasted anything in either. What a waste of $14. Protip - go somewhere else. I hear the DQ is the best restaurant in Santa Rosa (wish I was joking).

You have to be kidding me. I ordered the French toast and hash browns and when it came the waitress set the bill down with it. She wasn't rude just completely indifferent and mindless. I had a realisation. I don't really want to call it food, but it was the most pathetic attempt at a meal and portion I've ever been served in a restaurant. I got up and left without touching it. No way would pay them with my hard earned money, The $10 they expected was outrageous. It takes most people in America to work two hours to earn $10, But here's my point: I want to go to places like this to support small businesses, but why should I go there when they carelessly slap something together 10 times more horrible than Denny's for twice the price! if you wonder why your little town is dying and corporations took over look at the plate of food in front of you. This is America you have to compete you have to do better than what they do to survive! Take time with love to create a meal to nourish people you love, choose beautiful ingredients. True you're in the middle of nowhere and I don't expect culinary excellence, but what I do expect is something that looks delicious and is presented with love. Not something that was frozen on some truck and you quadrupled the price of.

  • Deb S.

Easy to see why Joseph's has been around for so long in a dying town ... Really tasty food, quick and friendly service, and nostalgic Route 66 ambiance. Make the stop. It's worth the trip,

  • Rebecca A.

Ok this place is open late and the sopas are good and it's semi cute. Love that fact that it has history! Don't expect to much from the food and you won't be disappointed. The service was good.

  • Natalia M.

The place is a must stop when you are on your way on old route 66. The food is predominantly mexican. I've tried the chicken quesadillas and my husband oredered bowl of chili (green) with ground beef and he said it was delicious. My quesadilla was ok. It has a gift shop full of memorabilia and clean bathrooms, wich is not a minor detail when you are en route!

    (3)
  • Ross T.

Good enough when you're desperate to stop and eat on a long road trip. To go out of your way to come here would be unthinkable.

  • Amanda W.

I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews, we had a great experience and a really good dinner. Food tastes good and was what we expected for a diner on Route 66. Staff was attentive and we never had to wait long for anything. The margaritas were great and we both had burgers. Highly recommend eating here if you stop in Santa Rosa

  • Mike R.

Avoid at all costs. Place is well past its prime. mexican food was burdened with too much sauce and too much cheesy goo. I ordered their Chile Rellano and it came out so tough I couldn't chew it. They apologized and brought tamales that were buried in cheese.

We had just returned from camping and love to find "family owned" restaurants like this one. They have a really nice menu/newspaper that explains Joseph, the namesake, who made a like in Santa Rosa with a pharmacist named Carmen. He went through the Great Depression, was in WW II and had 7 children. A niece waited on is today. I had their enchiladas and my hubby had tamales. Route 66 memorabilia everywhere. The niece was beautiful, as was the couple mentioned above. The nice thing was that sopapilla's were included with your meal. I was trying to make conversation about her family and I'm sure the niece hears it all the time. This generation of kids, and she was sweet, are not taught just how hard Joseph and Carmen had to work through everything. It was almost a burden to wait on us. And while she was the only one working from 2-5, I wondered if it was because tables were full and she nicely said no. So then I asked her if she would get mad if we wanted dessert as she brought us the ticket. She said no. I said that we hadn't gotten our sopapilla's and we ordered another dessert. She said that she wd get to it as soon as she could. We did ask for plates and never got them for the sopa's. I know that when family members are working, sometimes this attitude occurs but I pray that someday she realizes how beautiful she is outside and probably inside too. To her customers, it may be our first time ever reading about her family. And I understand her viewpoint. It's her 1000th time. She wd rake in tips if she realized that. Or whatever the problem, we chose that restaurant to give business to, not to be a bother. The woman who seated us, pleasant. Would have been an easy 4 stars if better customer service. I will try it again and hope that someone in the family gives her pointers. She could do an amazing job. I believe in her!

Good food in the void known as Santa Rosa. I had the smothered burrito and onion rings. Yummo!

    (4)
  • Aja G.

Ummmmm so yeah who serves warm beer to their guests? I understand it's hot here but when the beer is warmer then it is outside then why bother? Even the guy in the booth behind me complained about his beer. Also they advertise these great margaritas but will not sever them until 4pm... Lame! Food was just ok but over priced for what your getting.

Stopped here on my coast to cost trip and what a pleasent surprise! Had the Carne Adovada which was the lunch special. Tender pork with a well balanced marinade and red sauce was perfectly balanced. It came with rice and re-fried beans which rounded out the meal. Can't wait to visit Joseph's again!

Busy spring break Saturday afternoon, but not a bad wait. Nice size and flavor for burritos and enchiladas. Sopapillas definitely sealed the meal.

My family has dined here several times in the last few years as we travel from Dallas to Santa Fe/Taos, or on the way home. I was surprised to see the poor reviews based on our experiences. Granted, this is not The Mansion in Dallas, but given the location, and its competition, I would easily go 4 stars. Yesterday, we had the Carne Adovada Burrito w/ rice/beans, a green chili cheeseburger w/fries, and pork carnitas w/rice/beans. All were excellent! I have eaten at many of the most famous (and not-so-famous) spots in Santa FE, Taos, and northern NM, and have to say these dishes were as good as any. The Carne Adovada was some of the best I have ever tasted. Amazing. Atmosphere leaves something to be desired. This Hispanic family owned and operated restaurant is obviously proud of its American heritage, and the decor reflects this. Also, being located on Historic Route 66, there is a lot of decor in that genre too. Nothing wrong with any of this. However, overall it is a bit tired, and could use some freshening up I suppose. Then again, I hate to mess with history.

  • Brian T.

Awful! You should find another place even if it takes another hour of driving down the interstate. Don't mean to be rude but it was just really bad and over priced and stingy with the chips and salsa and everything else. Yes it may be nostalgic Route 66 but don't be fooled unless you are just stopping in for a beer to check out the joint. Wish I would have read some of the other reviews before stopping.

    (1)
  • Dalana B.

The decor is really cute. Very Route 66. The food is just ok. I got the enchiladas after the server recommended it. It was ok. I got a chicken, a beef and a cheese. They all tasted funny. Lots of food though. I was happy that the meal came with sopapillas!

Been there twice now while diving at Blue Hole, and intend on going back. The carne adovada is GREAT, with extra green sauce, tender meat and well spiced. Unlike Comet down the road (supposedly the best Mexican food - NOT) Joseph's doesn't charge for more chips and salsa. Service is hit or miss as it usually is in a small town. Nice Route 66/Blue Hole souvenir shop attached.

We stopped at Joseph's Bar and Grill because our hotel (Quality Inn Santa Rosa) recommended it as being the best restaurant in town. If this is the best I hate to think what the other one or two restaurants must be like. Joseph's Bar and Grill does have history in Santa Rosa, NM as you can read about from the menu which looks like a newspaper. The menu by far gets 4 stars but the restaurant is another story. It was dirty, really dirty and did I mention it was dirty. The restaurant was busy and I imagine the waitress and bus boys had not had an opportunity to tidy up the place. We still ordered a meal despite the dirt. The waitress was pleasant, she took our drink and food order. I ordered the Pattie Melt Deluxe and it was tasty. Service was okay but I was confused because some customers (most of them) got chips and salsa when they were seated but we didn't. When I asked the waitress about this she said "if you order Mexican food then you get the chips and salsa. That's funny because the other customers hadn't placed their orders. They sat down and they received chips and salsa. We sat down and received nothing. Just so happened my husband and I stuck out like a sore thumb in the restaurant and I will leave it at that. The food was okay and I was happy to leave. The gift shop which is attached to the restaurant had plenty of over priced merchandise (key chains, shot glasses, t-shirts, baseball caps etc) for tourist to purchase.

Among three Mexican restaurants in Santa Rosa, we decided to try this restaurant because it looked like a place the locals come to. Typical New Mexican restaurant decor...a lot of Route 66 souvenirs in their gift shop. There was another restaurant in the back which served pizza. As soon as we walked into the restaurant we were greeted with "we have a 25 minute wait" no hello, no smile but this brisk response. We looked around and noticed several tables open. Nonetheless we decided to ask for a menu whilst we waited and no sooner than we took one of their newspaper menus did another young waiter come up and say a table "just" opened up. Thank goodness they can see here too! So he promptly sat us while the rump roast sat behind his register, maybe he just didn't wanna get off his ass to clean a table. we were seated at a booth and waited about 10 minutes before our waitress took our drink orders (typical wait from the looks of other patrons) We ordered a water and one of their four margaritas. We ordered the "blue hole" which is exactly where it belongs! It tasted of water and tequila that has been dyed blue. I ordered the combination plate with tamale, chicken enchilada and chicken taco. My companion ordered the carne adovada plate. We got our food pretty fast but the complimentary chips and salsa which is usually served first was served after we got our meal. This was due to them running out of chips and salsa...for a pretty busy restaurant they're not prepared at all. The food came with "Joseph's extras" which is a cute name for the canned style refried beans and bland Spanish rice which was definitely made with minute rice and tossed with their watery salsa. The extras also included lettuce, tomatoes, sopapillas and honey. I found it amusing that these were called extras since these are what typically come with any Mexican entree. Moving on, the chicken enchiladas, chicken taco and the carne adovadas were fair as compared to Albuquerque Mexican restaurants. Can't complain there. The red chili shredded beef tamale was too salty. The salt outweighed the hard work it probably took to get that on my plate. (Believe me I know). We did not get our sopapillas that everyone raves about on yelp until we asked for it and when the waitress brought it out she did so with the check. The sopapillas were mediocre compared to most but who can mess up sopapillas? We departed without no "thanks for coming" or smiles from restaurant staff which is how we also left. Won't be returning here ever again which from the looks of the town no one ever comes back here...one star for attempt, we should have went to the other two Mexican restaurants that were recommended.

This was a very disappointing experience. I was super excited to try one of the older restaurants on Route 66...looks like we should have tried something a little newer. I had the Santa Fe grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken was bland and not all chargrilled as the menu stated. The green chilis were pretty much tasteless, and not exactly what this Texas girl expected coming to New Mexico expecting some heat. My son got the taco dinner that was supposed to come with chips and salsa and sopapillas. They were out of chips and salsa...WHAT? And the dessert was never offered. The highlight of the meal was my husbands chicken quesadillas. I am not sure if they were really that good or the other food was so sub par that it made these taste fantastic. Also, my $8.50 margarita tasted like more mix than anything else. Like I said disappointing, but cool concept being off of the Historic Route 66...just needs some help in the kitchen to make this place live up to the reputation of the Highway it is on.

Beware of the fire breathing dragon in the back that poses as a bartender, first and foremost. We were there on a Saturday night and it really seemed like the whole staff yearned to be somewhere else. And after sitting in this poorly lit place for 20 minutes without a beer, so did I. I know you're on Route 66, and everyone is just passing through, but you gotta try just a little bit. Next time, I will be going to McDonalds and then buying a 6 pack at a gas station before sitting in my hotel room far, far away from the dragon that resides in the back of Joseph's.

We stopped here after reading all of the mixed reviews and were glad we did. It is a route 66 relic, with lots of souvenirs as decoration. Seems to be family run and the food is excellent. I had two cheese burritos with rice, beans, and red and green "Christmas" style sauce. Delicious! I wasn't expecting the Ritz, but I did want good New Mexico cookin' and that is exactly what I got. Great waitress too. We'd definitely stop here again.

Get the veggie burrito and be prepared to wait for it. I was here 45 minutes before I got my food, and it was not busy. Luckily I was entertained by the plethora of weirdo patrons and comically inept waitstaff. Also, their "red sauce" is not a red sauce, but rather a bad mole sauce. Go with the green sauce instead.

Retro Route 66 atmosphere not Mexican. Confusing if you want Mexican food. Good service. My opinion: The Mexican food was disappointing. I think this restaurant tries to be too many things to too many people. I think Joseph's should stick to one ethnic food. American or Mexican - not both, and be the best in New Mexico. I guess my taste for Mexican Food is Tex-Mex, and would best be satisfied in Texas. Great chips and salsa, but my frozen margarita was marginal.

Joe's has been around for awhile. It sits next to the old, and closed, Club Cafe. The Club was an icon along Route 66. It also had very good food, great service, atmosphere and prices. However, Joe's strikes out on all counts. I'm a Route 66 buff and have stopped in Joe's many times over the years. It's connection to 66 being a bit stretched but is a draw nonetheless. But, let's face, Joe's isn't a very good place to eat. Joe's is owned by Joe Campos and his wife, Christina. Joe is in politics in Santa Rosa and ran for Lt. Governor awhile back. He lost. Joe's food isn't very good. I've tried so much of the menu that I feel like a homer. The Mexican food has that fake taste to it. The kind no self respecting Mexican would go near. A good friend of mine, who is Mexican, stopped there with his wife in 2011 (on my suggestion) and, well, I can't print what he said about the Mexican food. He had a hard time believing Campos was Mexican-American. The American food is, well, just plain bad. The burgers, somehow, are always cold and hard. The fries soggy and cold. The plate dishes reminded me of eating in a really bad Army mess hall back in the 60's, when no one gave a sh.. Your best bet at Joe's is breakfast. The mixed Mexican-American plate is ok. But, keep in mind whatever you order is going to be cold when you get it. I don't know about you but cold eggs over easy, cold potatoes and warm orange juice with coffee (if you manage to get some) just doesn't cut it. I really hate writing this review but I have to. I love the concept Joe's is running with, and that he is trying to keep some link to the old Route 66 days. Santa Rosa was a big 66 town in the old days. Many people stop there due to that connection, and end up in Joe's. I a way Joe & his lovely wife Christina have an obligation to do better. Things like the poor food preparation, the slow, uneven service, the high prices, the unkempt facilities and the lack of care for customers are either due to extremely poor management or oversight. Whatever it is I really hope Joe's can change, for the good. I'll still pop in now and then when I'm in town to check and see. But, as I read the Yelp remarks its clear the place is still having problems. Finally, rather than attack this review or ignore it, you guys might want to pay attention and try to fix the place. When you I'm sure the place will be a big hit along Route 66. Right now I cannot recommend it to anyone.

Good god awful. Terrible margaritas, burgers that taste like theyre from a box, and atrocious service. It took us thirty minutes to get a beer and then twenty more minutes to order. Im going out of my mind right now waiting for a check. Sadly this is probably the best this town has to offer. Continue on to santa fe.

This was our first dine-in on route 66 heading towards Arizona. Love the atmosphere and food!

Had a satisfying veggie burrito here on the way through town, with the green salsa very tasty. Clean without being oily or nasty as well which is often hard to find on the road. Thoroughly pleased.

My family of 4 ate at Josephs. It was not the best experience: 1. Wife ordered a spicy Carne Cuisada plate. It was luke warm, and we had to ask waiter to reheat it. 2. Brother ordered Chicken tenders, and it was horrible...all doughy. 3. My Chicken Fried Steak was very Average. 4. My 7 yr old boy ordered a hamburger, and the meat was rubbery. 5. My 5 yr old boy ordered enchiladas, and it was pretty good. I asked for more chips and salsa, and one of the lazy waitresses told me "sorry we ran out." Much to my surprise, I asked another waitress, and she brought me another bowl! After a long drive from skiing in NM, we really wanted a decent home cooked meal. This place says it was founded in the '50's. Wow, where did they learn to cook over the last 50 years? For 5 people and NO softdrinks, the bill was over $50 bucks + tip. I'd rather eat fast food somewhere else. Don't fall for this tourist trap.

Saturday night meal was poor. Enchiladas - nothing special. Stewed pork - too much chili powder. Burger - below avg? CFS - tasteless. Chicken strips - heavily coated with flour and stale, lumpy batter... sent back. Service was OK until the waitress asked repeatedly why I was returning the fried flour strips aka chicken strips. I decided NOT to order anything after that. How do you screw up type diner food? Less than 1/2 a mile down the road is Denny's. I should have went there instead.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
